ABOUT SHAMS TABRIZI

Shams Tabrizi (1185–1248) was a Persian mystic and philosopher, best known as the spiritual guide of the poet Jalal al-Din Rumi.

Born in Tabriz, Iran, Shams was a wandering dervish who sought divine truth through intense self-awareness and spiritual practice. His fateful meeting with Rumi in 1244 sparked a deep transformation in Rumi’s life, profoundly influencing the poet’s mystical writings.

Shams taught a radical philosophy that centered on the annihilation of the ego, and the pursuit of direct, personal experience with the divine. In Western thought, Shams’s influence has come largely through Rumi’s poetry, which has become immensely popular in the West for its messages of universal love, unity, and spiritual transcendence. His ideas resonate with themes in existential philosophy, focusing on self-discovery, and have shaped contemporary understandings of mysticism and spiritual awakening.
