ABOUT OMAR KHAYYAM

Omar Khayyam (1048-1131) was a Persian polymath known for his significant contributions to various fields, including mathematics, astronomy, philosophy, and poetry.

Born in Nishapur, in present-day Iran, Khayyam is perhaps best known in the West for his poetry, specifically the collection known as the “Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam.” These quatrains (four-line verses) were popularized in the English-speaking world through Edward FitzGerald’s 19th-century translations.

Khayyam’s poetry is celebrated for its philosophical depth, exploring themes of love, mortality, and the fleeting nature of life with a blend of skepticism and mysticism. His verses often reflect a contemplative, almost existential, outlook on human existence, urging readers to appreciate the present moment and find joy in the here and now.

Despite his renown as a poet, Khayyam’s scientific and mathematical achievements, including his work on the classification and solution of cubic equations and contributions to the development of the Persian calendar, are equally remarkable.
